Waterproof Fitness Trackers for Swimmers (2026)

We tested waterproof fitness trackers in the pool with youth swimmers. Here's which ones actually track laps, strokes, and heart rate underwater.

Most fitness trackers claim water resistance. Far fewer actually track swimming well. We put several popular models through a month of swim practice with competitive youth swimmers aged 10-16 to find out which ones deliver real pool data.

What “Waterproof” Actually Means

Water resistance ratings confuse most parents. Here’s the quick version:

  • IP68 means the device survived lab submersion in still water. It says nothing about swimming.
  • 5 ATM (50 meters) means it handles the pressure equivalent of 50 meters of still water. This is the minimum rating for lap swimming.
  • 10 ATM handles more intense water activities like diving starts and flip turns.

Any tracker marketed for swimming should carry at least a 5 ATM rating. Ignore IP68-only devices for pool use.

What Actually Matters in the Pool

After testing with our swim families, these features separated the useful trackers from the gimmicks:

Lap detection accuracy. Some watches consistently miss turns or double-count laps. We tested each tracker over 20 practice sessions and compared counts against manual tallies from coaches on deck.

Stroke recognition. Most modern swim trackers attempt to identify freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly automatically. Accuracy varies wildly. Backstroke detection tends to be the weakest across all models because the arm motion is less distinct to wrist-mounted sensors.

Heart rate in water. Optical wrist sensors struggle underwater because water refracts light differently than air. Some trackers compensate with improved sensors or multi-wavelength LED arrays, but none match the accuracy of a chest strap designed for swimming.

Battery life during GPS+swim sessions. Pool-only tracking barely dents battery. Open water swimming with GPS is a different story — expect 4-8 hours depending on the model.

Our Testing Results

We tracked three metrics across all devices: lap count accuracy, stroke type detection, and post-swim sync reliability.

What parents liked: the watch displays interval times on-screen between sets, so kids can check their pace without a coach reading splits from a stopwatch. The battery lasted through a full week of daily 90-minute practices.

The Ace 3 tracks swim duration and basic activity but does not count laps or detect stroke types. For younger swimmers (under 10) who just need a waterproof activity tracker that survives practice, it works fine. Do not buy this expecting detailed swim analytics.

Best for Serious Competitors: Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE offers the most detailed swim metrics of any watch in its price range. It tracks laps, stroke count per lap, average pace, distance, and active calories. The Workout app’s swim mode is straightforward — even 12-year-olds figured it out without help.

The tradeoff is battery life. Full GPS plus heart rate monitoring during swim sessions drains the battery faster than Garmin equivalents. Plan on charging every other day if your kid swims daily.

Open Water vs Pool Tracking

Pool mode uses the accelerometer to count laps based on a set pool length you configure in settings. Get this number right or every metric will be wrong. Most competitive pools are 25 yards or 25 meters — ask the coach if you’re unsure.

Open water mode activates GPS to trace the swim route and calculate distance. This is useful for triathlon training or lake swims but requires the GPS antenna to break the water surface periodically. Watches worn under a swim cap or submerged during long underwater glides will have GPS gaps.

For youth swimmers doing pool training exclusively, pool mode is all you need. Open water mode matters only if your kid races in triathlons or trains in lakes.

Chest Straps vs Wrist Sensors

If heart rate accuracy during swimming really matters to your family, consider a swim-compatible chest strap like the Garmin HRM-Pro Plus. It stores heart rate data internally during the swim (since Bluetooth doesn’t transmit through water) and syncs the data to the watch after your kid gets out of the pool.

This setup gives you a much more accurate heart rate curve for the entire session. Wrist-based optical sensors underwater typically show accuracy within 10-15 BPM on average, while chest straps stay within 2-3 BPM.

Most families don’t need this level of precision. It becomes relevant when a coach is prescribing heart rate zones for threshold sets or when a swimmer is training for state-level competition.

Chlorine and Long-Term Durability

Pool chemicals degrade watch bands and seals over time regardless of water resistance rating. Here’s what we learned from parents who’ve used swim trackers for multiple seasons:

  1. Rinse the watch under fresh water after every pool session. This takes 10 seconds and extends the band life significantly.
  2. Replace silicone bands every 6-12 months if your kid swims daily. Aftermarket bands cost $10-15.
  3. Never press buttons while the watch is submerged. Even 5 ATM-rated watches can let water in if a button creates a momentary seal break.
  4. Between seasons, store the watch in a dry place with the sensor side up to prevent moisture accumulation around the optical sensor.

What We’d Skip

Avoid trackers marketed as “swim-proof” with only an IP68 rating and no dedicated swim mode. They survive a splash but won’t track laps or strokes. Several budget fitness bands fall into this category.

Also skip any smartwatch that requires you to download a third-party swim tracking app. The built-in swim modes from Garmin, Apple, and Fitbit are far more reliable than aftermarket apps trying to interpret raw accelerometer data.
