Heart rate monitors used to be for elite athletes and patients with medical conditions. Now they’re embedded in everything from $80 fitness bands to $250 smartwatches. But should your 10-year-old really be tracking their heart rate during soccer practice?
After consulting with a pediatric sports medicine physician and testing three popular monitors with young athletes ages 8-16, we have a nuanced answer: it depends on why you’re monitoring.
Why Track a Young Athlete’s Heart Rate?
There are valid reasons to monitor - and some that aren’t worth the investment:
Good reasons:
- Medical conditions: Kids with known cardiac conditions who need heart rate boundaries during exercise
- Overtraining prevention: Competitive athletes training 5+ days per week who show signs of burnout
- Intensity guidance: Helping young athletes learn what “hard effort” versus “easy effort” actually feels like

These are approximate ranges. Individual variation is normal. A resting heart rate of 95 in a healthy 10-year-old is not a concern - but a sudden sustained change from their baseline could indicate overtraining or illness.

For kids who won’t tolerate a chest strap (which is most kids under 10), a wrist-based optical sensor is the practical choice. The Garmin Forerunner 55 offers continuous heart rate monitoring with reasonable accuracy - within 3-5 bpm of our chest strap readings during steady-state exercise.
Where wrist monitors struggle is during high-intensity intervals and sports with lots of wrist movement (basketball, volleyball). If pinpoint accuracy matters for medical reasons, the chest strap is still the better choice.
The Forerunner 55’s biggest advantage is that kids actually wear it willingly. It looks like a normal sports watch, tracks their activities, and doesn’t require a secondary device strapped to their chest.

When to Actually Worry
Most heart rate data from youth sports is interesting but not actionable. Here are the specific situations where the data matters:
See a doctor if:
- Resting heart rate suddenly increases by 15+ bpm and stays elevated for several days
- Your child reports heart racing, skipping beats, or chest pain during exercise
- Heart rate doesn’t return to near-resting within 10 minutes of stopping exercise
- Your child faints or feels dizzy during physical activity
Talk to their coach if:
- Average practice heart rate consistently exceeds 85% of max (potential overtraining)
- Recovery between drills takes longer than peers despite similar fitness levels
- Your child’s performance is declining despite increased training volume
Don’t worry about:
